About Overuse Injuries

Overuse injuries are a common affliction that often develop gradually over an extended period, rather than resulting from a sudden, acute traumatic event. These types of injuries are typically characterised by repetitive minor or micro trauma to the muscles, joints, ligaments, or tendons, which can manifest in conditions such as tendinopathies or stress fractures.

Unlike acute injuries that occur from a singular, identifiable incident, overuse injuries stem from the cumulative strain placed on the body through repetitive, sustained movements or activities, often performed without adequate rest and recovery time.

This is rooted in the fundamental training principle that the body will adapt to the specific demands placed upon it. However, when those demands become excessive and exceed the body’s capacity to cope, the result can be the development of an overuse injury. This frequently occurs when individuals take up a new hobby, sport, or activity, or significantly ramp up the intensity or duration of their training regimen, such as in preparation for a major event. Because the onset of overuse injuries is gradual, they can often go unnoticed.  Common manifestations include pain, stiffness, swelling, and decreased range of motion, which may worsen over time if the underlying cause is not addressed through appropriate rest, modification of activity, and targeted treatment. Understanding the mechanisms behind overuse injuries is crucial for preventing their occurrence and ensuring a healthy, active lifestyle.
