FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WOMEN’S HEALTH

What is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?

Women’s Health Physiotherapy focuses on conditions affecting the pelvic floor, bladder, bowel, and reproductive health at all stages of a woman’s life – from pregnancy and postpartum to menopause and beyond. It helps improve function, reduce pain, and enhance quality of life through evidence-based assessment and treatment.

What conditions can a Women’s Health Physiotherapist help with?

A Women’s Health Physiotherapist can assist with:

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Urinary or faecal incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pregnancy-related back or pelvic pain
  • Postnatal recovery (including diastasis recti)
  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Endometriosis-related pelvic pain
  • Menopausal pelvic changes
  • Pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation (e.g. hysterectomy)
  • Return to sport

What can I expect during my first appointment?

Your initial session will include a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors. With your consent, a physical examination may be performed — which can include assessment of posture, core muscles, and pelvic floor function. Your physiotherapist will then develop a personalised treatment plan.

Is an internal examination always required?

Not always. An internal exam can provide valuable information about pelvic floor strength and function, but it is only performed with your full consent. Many assessments and treatments can be done externally if you prefer.

How does physiotherapy help with urinary incontinence?

Physiotherapy strengthens and retrains the pelvic floor muscles, improves bladder control, and helps you identify and manage triggers. Tailored exercises and lifestyle strategies can significantly reduce or eliminate leakage.

Can physiotherapy help after childbirth?

Yes absolutely.  Postnatal physiotherapy can support recovery from vaginal or caesarean birth, help restore core and pelvic floor strength, address pain, and manage issues like prolapse or incontinence. It’s beneficial whether you’re weeks, months, or even years postpartum.

How long does it take to see results?

This depends on the condition and your consistency with treatment. Many women notice improvements within a few weeks of starting targeted exercises and therapy. We can monitor your progress and adjust your plan as needed.

Can physiotherapy help during pregnancy?

Absolutely. Physiotherapy during pregnancy can ease back and pelvic pain, improve posture, teach safe exercise techniques, and prepare your pelvic floor for labour and recovery.

Do I need a referral to see a Women’s Health Physiotherapist?

In most cases, you can book directly without a referral. However, some insurance providers or healthcare systems may require one — check your policy or ask our team for guidance.

Is Women’s Health Physiotherapy only for women who’ve had children?

Not at all. Women of all ages can benefit — including those who are pregnant, postnatal, peri-menopausal, or simply experiencing pelvic or bladder concerns.

What treatments are used in Women’s Health Physiotherapy?

Treatment options may include:

  • Pelvic floor muscle training
  • Core rehabilitation
  • Manual therapy
  • Postural and breathing re-education
  • Lifestyle and bladder/bowel habit advice
  • Education and self-management strategies
