Ms Melanie Healey qualified as a Podiatrist in 1994 from the University of Southampton and has been working in private practice as a biomechanics specialist ever since. As a member of the Excel Sports Medicine unit, the team manage a wide range of sports injuries, treating both amateur and professional sportsmen and women.
The mechanics of the foot and lower limb contribute significantly to the development of a wide range of lower limb and foot injuries. Some of the common injuries are, shin splints, knee pain, achilles tendinitis, and a variety of problems within the foot itself.
In the majority of cases some form of orthotic (insole) will be prescribed to correct the abnormal alignment of the foot. This has the effect of altering the forces going up the limb, which allows many injuries to resolve, and more importantly, prevents them from recurring.
Melanie also works in the NHS as a clinical specialist for Orthopaedic Choice, a multi disciplinary triage service. For the past 15 years she has provided a podiatry service for the army and also holds clinics in a number of locations in Hampshire and the New Forest.
