About Sciatica

Sciatica is a common and often painful condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and into each leg, becomes irritated or compressed. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including sharp, shooting pain in the lower back, buttocks, and down the back of one leg. The pain may also be accompanied by numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg or foot.

While sciatica is rarely a serious medical emergency, it can be an extremely uncomfortable and even debilitating condition that interferes with daily activities. The exact cause of sciatica can vary, but common culprits include a herniated or bulging disc in the spine, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), or muscle spasms in the back or buttocks that put pressure on the nerve.

Treatment for sciatica typically focuses on relieving pain and addressing the underlying cause.
